THE BACKSTORY...Hello, I hope this post finds you well! I'm reaching out to you on behalf of my nephew Carter and his family. Carter is almost 2 years old now, and was born with fibular hemimelia. For those who are unfamiliar with this disorder, this is when a child is born with a congenital absence of the fibula at birth. During November of 2020, Carter's right leg was amputated beneath the knee and he will live his life with a prosthesis... which leads to how you can help.
ABOUT PROSTHETICS...
COST: Looking forward, it's difficult to calculate a dollar amount for Carters prosthetics because a lower extremity can cost $5,000 to $50,000, or more depending on design and materials. Even a high quality prosthesis is expected to last only 3-5 years, meaning Carter with be living with this expense for the rest of his life.
QUANTITY: Just as children outgrow shoes, Levis, and baseball tees, Carter will outgrow his prosthesis. While timelines may vary, it's reasonable to anticipate a new prosthesis annually until the age of 5. From ages 5 to 12 a new prothesis biannually, and then every 3-4 years until the age of 21.
YOUR DONATION...
This fundraiser is solely for Carter's future prosthetics and therapy. Jon and Kayla have received financial aide from Shriners Children hospital but that is not guaranteed in the future and certainly not available to him once a young adult. As his uncle, I wish for him a childhood with every opportunity offered you and I. A harsh reality; that may not be the case, but he has a unique place in this world and an unstoppable spirit. A donation will contribute to his quality of life, sports opportunities, and self esteem throughout his journey.
I believe seeing his joy in walking for the first time alone will inspire a more grateful heart in all of us.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, be blessed friends!
