Meet Alan Schechter, the guy that never gives up, has a knack for finding the silver lining in a crummy situation, uses his exceptional flute playing to enchant the world, uses his quick wit to brighten up the day, and has a deep love for his family and friends with a huge emphasis on his love for his wife, Stacy. In a word, Alan is INSPIRING!
About 7 years ago, Alan was told he had a rare congenital problem with AVM's, less commonly referred to as Arteriovenous malformations. And AVM is an abnormal tangle of arteries and veins that can negatively affect blood circulation and oxygen delivery to all parts of the body. Some AVMs can be treated. Some cannot. For Alan, a brilliant professional flute and piccolo player, having low oxygen levels in his blood caused a bit of a challenge while rehearsing and performing in an orchestra. Over time, these challenges got bigger and bigger.
The fix for an AVM is a surgical procedure called embolization. Alan has had many, both AVM surgeries and AVMs. Not all can be fixed. It is with extreme sadness that I report that Alan's fight with AVMs has ended this afternoon. Alan died while holding his dad's hand. Fast. Without pain. With the people he loved either at his side or with him in spirit.
Alan's wife, Stacy, and Alan's family are facing some monster sized medical bills. This fundraising campaign is to cover expenses including (but not limited to) 2 weeks of ICU charges, ambulance rides, medication, the devices that helped him get through the day, funeral expenses, and all of the things that follow the loss of a loved one.
Alan only had 42 years with us on this earth and over 15 years of it was spent with his wonderful wife, Stacy. I'd speak with them at least weekly and I could tell and feel the strength of their relationship and love for each other. To Alan, family is everything. Spending time with his nephew was his joy.
In Alan's honor, please consider contributing anything you may be able to afford to help Alan's family and friends, giving them both emotional and financial support as we mourn the loss of one of the most remarkable people I was honored to call, my best friend.
