AVID Scholar Athletes Are College-Bound

I am Angelo Sandoval. I am a teacher at Edison and have had the privilege of teaching an amazing group of student-athletes from their sophomore year to their graduation this upcoming May.
The AVID Scholar Athlete program was started in 2018 as an experiment to recruit and retain minorities of color in the AVID program. Student-athletes with average grades were recruited their freshman year and offered the chance to join the program in their sophomore year to help them achieve their athletic and academic potential. The class started with 17 male students and one female student named Joey (we recruited by first name and she wanted to be in the class...SHE WILL BE VALEDICTORIAN OF THE CLASS OF 2021).
The class grew to 21 in 2019-20 as we lost two students but gained 5 more. One major focus of the class is on the AVID curriculum which involved organization, college and career skills, tutorial, academic discussions, and writing. The second major focus was on building up the mentality of the student athletes to deal with adversity. We read books such as Extreme Ownership, The Young Champion's Mind, and The Obstacle is the way. We regularly watched ordinary people doing extraordinary things and read articles of less fortunate people overcoming difficult challenges.
The last major focus of the program was to expose the AVID Scholar Athletes to experiences that would open their minds to future possibilities and motivate them both academically and athletically. Throughout their sophomore year and halfway through their junior year our class was fortunate enough to attend events that combined both education and sports hosted by The Pac 12, Mexico's National Soccer Team, the Stockton Kings, and the Oakland Athletics. We were even able to attend a special viewing of Hamilton in San Francisco as part of the Gildern Lerhman Education Program.
We had big plans for their junior and senior year. COVID happened and I have not seen my kids in person since March of 2020. A year+ of events and memories did and will not happen. So, my new goal is the give these awesome student-athletes a gift that will last the rest of their lives. I would love to provide each of them a letterman jacket to reward them for sticking with the program and reaching all the goals we set in the beginning of their sophomore year. The jackets cost $219 each and I would need to purchase 21 of them.
As of creating this GoFundMe...
