Aviation and Education - Introduction to Rocketry

The Aviation and Education Foundation was founded to motivate kids in the Aviation, Rocketry and Space Sciences fields. We have developed a STEM curriculum for Rocketry that is currently being taught in APS (Albuquerque Public Schools). The class involves Rocketry terms, principles and scientific discussion that is combined in a lab book. The kids learn and discuss space and rockets while building a model rocket that they launch up to 3 times on launch day. The kids keep their rockets and lab books. We are also developing new classes and curriculums in the STEM fields.
The classes have been an overwhelming success both at APS and at Explora, (the state’s largest hands-on scientific museum). We also bring our experiments and demonstrations to The New Mexico Science Fiesta each year. The Las Cruces Space Festival among other STEM events will be included this year.
The opportunity is here to help bring New Mexico students to the forefront of Aerospace Engineering and Space Sciences. We believe this starts at a young age. Getting the students motivated and excited about space, rockets and engineering is the goal and the most rewarding part of our classes.
The two most challenging parts of this are:
1. Working with the teachers to integrate a curriculum that fits within each class while providing truly inspirational learning and funding the program so that there is not a scramble for funds when the educators are ready for the class.
2. Having pre-funded classes that allow much more flexibility for the foundation and for teachers in the classroom. School today is a very structured and intense experience. We don’t want to interrupt that flow with classes hinging on funding.
The interest and requests are present for the classes. Teachers love having experts come to their classes and provide specific STEM subject matter to the students.
Our main risk is having more classes canceled (or not scheduled) because of a lack of funding. This mostly affects low income and rural area schools where individual or family funding is much more difficult.
Our goal is to excite and motivate kids to pursue education and careers in STEM related fields, specifically Aerospace Engineering, Space Sciences, and Aviation. Commercial space travel will be a reality for our next generations and we must prepare and show them the possibilities that await them.
