Hello, I am Avery Gleason and I attend Flagstaff Junior Academy. This past February I took part in my school’s National History Day (NHD) and was selected to participate in the regional competition at Northern Arizona University. After being chosen as a finalist at the regional competition, I attended the Arizona state competition in March at Arizona State University where I was again chosen as a finalist. As a state finalist, I have the opportunity to attend the national competition this June in Washington, D.C..

My NHD project is a documentary titled "Navajo Language from Tragedy to Triumph in World War II". It is about how the United States government tried to prevent the use of the Navajo language during its attempt to assimilate Navajos through the use of boarding schools. Then during World War II, the Navajo language was used to create a military code for the United States Marine Corps. This unbreakable code, which was created by the Navajo Code Talkers, helped the United States to triumph over Japan.
One of the reasons I chose this topic is my great grandfather, Benjamin Cleveland, was one of the original 29 Navajo Code Talkers.
Since the trip to the week-long competition in Washington D.C. is the responsibility of my family and I, I am fundraising to help cover some of the costs which includes airfare and hotel.
I am excited to have the opportunity to attend the NHD national competition and will do my very best to represent my school, community, family, and the Navajo Nation. I appreciate any support you would like to offer.
