Avery Newton is a sweet, smart and sassy 3 year old who was diagnosed with epilepsy at 1 year of age. During this time she had an MRI to evaluate why she was having seizures and a brain abnormality was accidentally found.

Avery was also diagnosed with a Chiari Malformation with a 50% chance it remained the same, 30% it would improve and 20% it would get worse. We have monitored this for 1.5 years but unfortunately no changes have been seen, the chiari remains severe. If it progresses Avery could have some serious neurological complications so the neurosurgeon discussed surgery at our last appointment in December 2019 as her condition is severe.

As of January 2020 we have decided to proceed with brain surgery, an open duraplasty procedure where the covering of the brain is opened and a patch is sewn in to create more space. The surgery will be performed at MUSC in Charleston, SC. Avery will require a several day hospital stay after the surgery and time at home after this to recover.

The funds donated to Avery will help us to cover all of the medical costs as well as uninsured medical expenses, stay and travel (approximately 2 hours away). Avery does not qualify for any type of medical assistance, Medicaid, TEFRA or any waivers as she does not have severe “physical disabilities”.
