Avery Needs PTSD Service Dog
My name is Avery, I'm an autistic adult with PTSD from childhood and domestic trauma and chronic dissociative episodes. With the help of my therapist, I am currently undergoing Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy and scored 56% (30% is high) on the DES-II scale for dissociative symptoms, but my therapist as well as my primary care physician agreed that a service dog would greatly help my ability to navigate everyday life through my dissociative episodes.
My family is the primary source of my trauma with heroin addiction alcoholism, neglect, felonies, physical, verbal, and emotional abuse. Outside of my family abuse, I have had sexual abuse. I have been through 12 car accidents and cannot drive, but hope to learn to someday.
I managed to work several jobs and push myself through college on my own, but need help affording a service dog to help me heal from trauma and keep me safe during dissociative episodes. I currently work on average of 50 hours a week, and am looking for a second job to try to finance this, but I have physical health limitations such as Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and Fibromyalgia/Chronic Pain.
Lately my episodes are getting worse, happening daily and often during dangerous times like while riding my bike on the side of the highway or during work where I can't remember significant gaps of time, from minutes to hours; the longest episode lasting 6 hours of memory loss.
I will train the dog myself with the help of Dogs for Invisible Disabilities .
According to their website, the cost of training will be $2000 , and with thorough searching, the type dog I am looking to get will likely cost between $1,000 to $1,500.
Poodles are one of the most recommended breeds for PTSD service dogs, so I am looking at getting a standard or moyen poodle.
Any little bit helps tremendously, and I will be saving up as much as I can.
