On Tuesday, October 6th, 2020, Benjamin R. Bevan Jr., better known as Ben, lost his 7th month fight with cancer and went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in his home in Folsom, NJ, surrounded by his beloved wife, Rachel on the day of their 7th wedding anniversary, and children.
He is survived by his loving wife Rachel A. Bevan (nee Schell) and devoted father of Benjamin R. Bevan III, Joshua A. Bevan, Matthew E. Bevan, and Avery J. Bevan. He was the cherished son of Benjamin R. Bevan, Sr. (Diane) and Janice (nee Haggerty) Hinkle (Jack), the loving son-in-law of Bob and Ann Schell and dear brother of Debbie Anastasi (Tom) and Ruth Esposito (Bobby Joe) and brother-in-law of Jason Schell (Jennifer). He is also survived and was loved dearly by his uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Ben was born in Lansdale, PA and raised in Linwood, NJ. He was a graduate of NJ’s Mainland High School, and his passion for cooking drove him to graduate with an Associate Degree in Culinary Arts at Atlantic Community College. His passion for food resulted in a long career within the industry beginning as a head chef at The Inn at Sugar Hill in Mays Landing, NJ, and spent the last 15 years at Sysco Foods in Philadelphia, most recently in the position of District Manager.
Three of the most important things in Ben’s life were his love for the Lord, his wife Rachel and 4 children Benjamin R. Bevan III, Joshua A. Bevan, Matthew E. Bevan and, last but definitely not least, his princess Avery Joy Bevan. Ben loved the shore, Ocean City specifically, where he spent most of his time either on vacation with his family, fishing, or spending time with his customers that he considered friends. He grew up surfing and fishing and passed his love for the shore onto his kids. You could always catch him fishing, body surfing, riding water slides, building sandcastles with his kids, taking walks to collect shells, walking the boardwalk, or playing the “ball game” in the sand.
Ben had many passions, but two of his biggest were being a mentor to the youth through his church and coaching. Ben had a huge impact on the lives of so many people, especially at Camp Haluwasa and Lake Lenape. Anyone who had the opportunity to meet Ben walked away a better person. He was constantly giving and always putting the needs of other people before his own. His passion for cooking and entertaining always had people in the house or backyard playing games waiting for the giant spread of delicious food he was preparing. He loved having a house full of people. Ben’s passion for cooking also led him to help the less fortunate as he would cook for and feed the homeless in Camden, Philadelphia, and Atlantic City. He was also a yearly participant in the Polar Bear Walk/Run that helped raise funds to fight autism.
Ben’s character was unmatched, and he will continue to impact lives after his passing. He always said, true character is who you are when no one else is watching.
