Avenal Shelter Play Area

Bring some much-needed sunshine, grass and exercise to the forgotten dogs of Avenal City Shelter!

We (Avenal volunteers) are asking you to help us build a fence around a large, grassy area behind the Avenal shelter and give the dogs a play yard. This fundraiser has been created and promoted by independent volunteers of the shelter; who want to gift this shelter with a (much-needed) play area. We are passionate people on a mission to improve the lives of so many dogs that call Avenal shelter their home. We know from first-hand experience, the needs and limitations of the shelter; we see dogs light up from even 5mins out of their kennels. They want our love and they deserve time to exercise in the fresh air, away from the stresses of confinement and isolation. Unfortunately, this is not possible when each volunteer can only take one dog out at a time on a lead (there are just not enough hours in a day). We have the city's approval for the project but the city is NOT receiving the funds directly. ALL DONATIONS we receive will go directly into funding this specific project. From our experience, we believe this is the best way to resolve multiple obstacles that face the shelter and ultimately will lead to more adoptions!

The lot will be divided into two long runs and one large park area, which will greatly improve the quality of life for the shelter's dogs and aid in staff efficiency of essential, daily tasks (sanitizing of kennels, feeding etc). Since there isn't an outdoor area to move the dogs, cleaning kennels is a two-person job limited to one kennel at a time. One person must clean while the other is keeping the dog leashed; consuming a minimum of 5-10mins for both people. Now, times that by not 50, but 75 dogs! An outdoor space would provide enrichment for the dogs and allow volunteers/staff more time and energy to spend on outreach, awareness and adoption for these dogs.

The city shelter and the many dogs that reside in it are underserved, unnoticed and in need of saving. They live out of sight and out of mind in small, concrete kennels for weeks or even months at a time without exercise. Confined to a small space without companionship, these dogs can experience extreme distress that only gets worse over time. Unfortunately, this makes loving dogs reactive and less likely to be adopted. Kennel stress is a serious, cyclic problem and this fence is our solution!

Just like humans, they need an environment that makes them feel safe, encourages positive behaviors, and provides regular socialization and exercise.
The circumstances that lead these animals here are unfair, devastating and often inhumane. Still, after everything they go through, all they want is to shower you with love; we think they deserve to be noticed. We need your help to give them a chance.

Avenal shelter has a maximum capacity of 50 dogs, yet the shelter (and its hard-working staff) are consistently providing for over 70 at a time.
The dedication and compassion of the staff and volunteers are what keep the shelter running at a constant overflow. However, due to limited funding and resources, the shelter is barely staying above water and this park project will be a monumental win for the shelter, the staff and so many forgotten dogs. It might seem like a simple fence but it is the key to improving the quality of life for these desperate animals and increasing adoption rates for our shelter!
