Avefua "Max" Togisala was a father, grandfather, husband, martial artist, friend, mentor, leader, and teacher. He spent his life dedicated to his family, friends, and the martial arts. Everything he did, he did it with the "aloha" spirit. He loved to laugh, listen to music, talk story, and share his knowledge of Kajukenbo and martial arts with everyone. I met him at the young age of 7 through one of his Kajukenbo schools in San Jose. He later became my instructor. He was always there to encourage me and fill me with knowledge. He later became my "stepdad" when he and my mom married in February 2000. He was the love of her life, and she his. He has loved being Grandpa to my children, Gabe and Cruz, as well as my brothers children, Bryce and Ethan. Anytime Max saw my boys, he would just smile and they would brighten up his day. The boys loved him and miss their Grandpa deeply. My mom is crushed beyond words.
Max has left us too soon. He has been battling dementia and many other health issues for quite some time. My family went to visit him on Sunday, the day before he left us. I cried and we had our time together. I held his hand and told him I loved him. He was not doing good and I knew his time might be coming soon.
I have set up this page to help with the cost of the memorial service and other costs associated with the service. The service will be held on Thursday, September 26th from 5pm-9pm. We will need to make payment by Tuesday, September 23. More details to come. Many friends and family have been asking how they can help. This is one way you can help. Any amount will aid as we honor this amazing man in celebration of his life.
