Hi, my name is Ava Lena Jackson and I live in Mobile, Alabama. I am 10 years old and in the 5th grade.
Two years ago, I was told by my friend, whose sister was adopted from Uganda, about the great need for mosquito nets there. Right then, I knew that I wanted to help but I wasn't sure how I could make a difference. How could I help when I am a child myself? This year, I continued to feel like God had put this mission on my heart and have asked for help.
On May 27, 2017, family friends of ours will be traveling to the villages of Jinja, Uganda, visiting homes of children sponsored through Friends for Hope. As soon as I heard that they would be going back to Uganda, I asked if there was a way that I could help provide for the families.
Here is a picture of a family there that will be visited.
Four of these sweet children sleep on this one mattress. Each day, they must hang it in the sun to dry if it is soiled due to them not having any running water.
They also do not have a mosquito net. This family, as well as so many others, are so desperately poor that they cannot afford food much less a mosquito net.
A mom and her five children sleep in this room. They must sleep with only a few rags on the dirt floor.
Mosquito nets are needed to help prevent Malaria, which is the primary cause of death in children in Uganda. Here is a mosquito net in one of the homes in Jinja.
A mosquito net such as this one, costs $15.00. For this small amount, a child may be saved from the deadly Malaria disease.
My hope is to raise money to purchase many mosquito nets, as well as meet some of the other basic needs for the children in Uganda. Even though I have never met them, I love them and want to help them live healthy lives. I want to give them hope as well. Hope that someone, even someone their age, cares about them.
Every single cent of money donated will go directly to Ugandan children and their families. All mosquito nets, mattresses (if needed) and/or food will be purchased by Dana Whitton once she arrives in Uganda with the organization, Friends for Hope. She will also be taking pictures of the families when they receive their gift. I will be so excited to share them with you!!
