Ava’s 200-Mile Run Across Tajikistan for AwF

Donation protected
Hi, I’m Ava. I’m pursuing a PhD in Aquaculture at the University of Stirling. In May 2026, I will be taking on the Great Silk Run in Tajikistan, running 200 miles across the country over 8 days. This is an extreme challenge, averaging more than a marathon a day through some of the most remote and rugged terrain on Earth, but it is a challenge I have chosen with purpose.

I am running to raise funds for Aquaculture without Frontiers (AwF) a charity that empowers communities through sustainable aquaculture. In countries like Tajikistan and across Central Asia, food insecurity is a serious issue. Around 28% of people experience moderate or severe food insecurity, and most food is imported, leaving communities vulnerable to external shocks. Aquaculture offers a sustainable solution. It can strengthen local food systems, support livelihoods, and create opportunities for women and marginalised peoples.

As a woman working in aquaculture research, I am aware of the privilege I have to study, to be heard, and to pursue opportunities that are not available to everyone. This made me especially passionate about supporting AwF’ women’s network, which empowers women in local communities to take control of their food systems, build skills, and make decisions that shape their futures.

I chose AwF because they focus on capacity building, transparency, and lasting impact. Their mission also aligns with my work as a researcher and with my commitment to equity, sustainability, and resilience.

Essentially, this run bridges my three worlds: my life as a runner, as a researcher, and as someone passionate about creating a fairer world. Every mile I run will be for these communities and for the future of sustainable aquaculture.

I would be incredibly grateful for your support. Together we can turn miles into meaning, helping AwF strengthen food systems, empower women, and build sustainable futures.
