Ava Kaufman, Ava's Heart

Tax deductible

CNN Heroes 2021 campaign

Twelve years ago, an autoimmune disease wiped out Ava Kaufman’s muscular system. Near death, the former dancer and fitness enthusiast went from tip-top health to being bedridden and on life support. Ultimately, Ava’s life was saved because of an experimental heart transplant. When she learned that some patients like her could not even get listed for a transplant because they could not afford housing near a transplant hospital, Ava started a non-profit that provides free housing and financial support to transplant patients in need. Her organization, Ava’s Heart, also supports the families of organ donors. Since she started, Ava has helped about 175 people with post-transplant housing, and about 150 more with support services and financial assistance.
