Hi my name is Claire and I am fundraising for my best friends daughter Ava to have a therapy wedge of her own at home, a wedge is a piece of custom made mobility equipment to help children with special postural support needs.
Ava was diagnosed with a devastating terminal illness four years ago, aged just 10, Metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) has meant that she has lost so much in that time, her ability to go to secondary school with her primary school friends, her voice, her mobility, her ability to eat and drink, her eyesight and so much more, including a future like other children her age will have, her family have had to move to a bungalow and have their home and vehicles regularly adapted to suit Ava’s ever changing needs. Their lives have changed beyond recognition and Ava will continue to lose every skill she ever developed.
Ava’s school have a wedge for her and have seen how happy she is when she’s on it and have lent it to Ava’s family to use whilst they are closed over the summer.
This has made such a difference to Ava on a daily basis as she is really struggling at the moment, she cries a lot and her illness means she can’t communicate why, but she doesn’t cry when she is on the wedge so having her own at home after the summer holidays is fundamental to her wellbeing.
There is only one company in England that custom make these and they are expensive, as you can imagine,
Ava’s favourite colour is blue so we would like to order her one in that colour.
Jenx therapy items are bright, easy-to-use therapy aids that children can quickly start to benefit from without undergoing formal assessment.
The wedge is bigger than Ava and it allows her to lay on her tummy and be fully supported whilst doing so. It has straps to keep her centred, side walls to
prevent rolling and an abduction
block to maintain a neutral hip position.
Nothing that Ava has needed on this journey has been easy, her family have had to fight for a diagnosis and support ever since.
So if you can make a donation, no matter how small or share this so it reaches more people who can, we would be ever so grateful with your help to ease Ava’s daily suffering and make life just that little bit easier for this beautiful girl and her wonderful family.
