This is for my daughter Emma.
I want to share with you something my daughter Emma and I are working on together.
For those who don't know Emma, she is a living miracle. Emma was born with a serious congenital heart defect caused by a chromosomal deletion. The syndrome associated with the deletion is commonly known as DiGeorge Syndrome and is similar to Downs Syndrome in that it causes developmental delays and is also often accompanied by serious health issues. In her case she had a very serious heart problem called pulmonary atresia that threatened her life from the moment she was born. Her situation was so grave that the heart specialists here in Utah sent us to Stanford for surgeries and care. Thanks to great surgeons, nurses and God’s blessing, she is with us today and going strong.
Emma still has health challenges (pulmonary hypertension, scoliosis and some significant learning challenges), but she and we recognize that her life is a gift and we decided it was time to try to say thanks. So she and I committed that we would serve as Co-Chairs for the American Heart Association’s 2016 Heart Gala. I am reaching out to my friends to ask that you join Emma and me in helping other children with heart problems fight for a better future by helping support the 2016 Heart Gala.
The goal of the Heart Gala and the Utah AHA is to advocate for more research and swifter action for all heart health issues, including issues like Emma’s. Fifteen years ago when Emma was born the care she received was considered cutting edge and we had to travel out of state to receive it. Today, cases like hers are dealt with locally on a regular basis. Advances in research and technology are making differences and saving and changing lives. I am asking that you please join me and Emma in helping to make today’s cutting edge procedures tomorrow’s common place procedures.
We are already contacting businesses around the state asking for support but we figured it wouldn't hurt to ask my facebook friends to help in the cause. Even if all you can afford is a small donation we would be so grateful. Help us give back to the Heart Community that has given so much to us! Every dollar donated will be delivered as a "gift from the heart" to the Heart Association at the Heart Gala on June 8th.
