Several weeks ago, we received devastating news that my sister Lori was diagnosed with stage 3c ovarian cancer. Lori was completely asymptomatic until just a few weeks ago, and now her oncologist told her she has six months or less to live without aggressive chemotherapy treatment. Lori immediately had surgery to remove the cancer, but it was unsuccessful because the cancer had spread and become too pervasive. Lori was miserable with a condition called Ascites which was caused by her cancer, and She had 8 Liters of fluid drained from her abdominal cavity to reduce the pressure. It helped to relieve her pain and enable her to breathe more freely, and gave her back mobility.

After considering her options or lack of them, she chose to pursue cancer treatment in Arizona at Envita Medical Center, advanced precision medicine for cancer treatment, where she felt she had her best outcomes for quality of life and prognosis.

Lori has lived a life of service both to our country as a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy and as a nurse for 41 years. She has spent her career caring for hospitalized patients going through medical crises, and now she's going through her own. She has faithfully put money away into her 401(k) for 41 years and will need to drain most of it to pay for this cancer treatment because it won't be covered by insurance. This individualized treatment is 16 weeks long and costs $150,000 - $180,000 in addition to food, lodging, and transportation expenses she will incur during treatment.

While Lori's prognosis is grim, her attitude and outlook are not. Lori is a deeply committed Christian who believes God is her healer and fully believes he will bring restoration. Lori's faith has not been shaken, she believes God is still a good God who sits on the throne in her life, and she is the first to give Him praise, even in the face of this challenge. She's excited to start her "field trip to Arizona" as she refers to her cancer journey.

Lori was hoping to retire this summer, and we are believing God will give her many more good years ahead.
