A Courageous Mother, Business Owner, and Warrior in the Face of Adversity
Dear Friends, Family, and Compassionate Strangers,
With a heavy heart and an urgent plea for support, we share the courageous journey of Autum Breckenridge, a phenomenal 34-year-old woman facing triple-negative breast cancer while 34 weeks pregnant with her fourth child. As a small business owner of a home bakery, “Southern SweetArt”, she embodies resilience while continuously giving back to her community. Autum is an active member of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a scout leader in the Boy Scouts of America, and passionately supports the Miracle League and Le Bonheur Children's Hospital through charitable donations, driven by her love for her special needs son.
A Family's Unforeseen Challenge
Last week, during a routine OB appointment, Autum discovered a sizable mass in her left breast. What initially seemed like a common pregnancy-related concern, quickly unfolded into a nightmare. An ultrasound led to further examinations, resulting in a biopsy. On Tuesday, 12/12/2023, her results were reviewed with the Tumor Board, and the heartbreaking news delivered: Autum is facing Triple-Negative Breast Cancer.
The Unyielding Strength of Motherhood
Autum, is a mother of three, the eldest being special needs, and is currently pregnant with her fourth. She embodies strength and resilience. Amidst this life-altering diagnosis, she remains strong throughout her pregnancy, her commitment to her family shining through. However, the urgency of her situation necessitates starting chemotherapy as soon as possible, a decision not taken lightly while carrying a new life.
The Plan
The multidisciplinary medical team is collaborating to formulate a plan expeditiously. On 12/14/2023, Autum will be induced at 34 weeks. She already started steroid injections to attempt to mature the baby's lungs. After delivery, she will have an MRI and PET scan to check for any metastasis. On Friday, she will have a port placed so that chemotherapy can begin over the weekend. She will be faced with both a NICU stay for the baby and her own cancer treatment, leading to overwhelming medical costs. Given the aggressiveness of this type of cancer, it is crucial to react quickly. We are grateful that it was caught early and for her medical team developing a plan and implementing it so quickly, which will increase her survival outcomes.
