As most of you have heard, my apartment burned down on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 in the Walnut Manor fire. I had just left for the dentist, and all other tenants in the building made it out safely. As I was not home, I am unsure if my cat was able to get out.
I’m not giving up hope that Tilly made it out alive - we have posted her picture and information anywhere we can and pray she comes home to us.
As thankful as I am that my neighbors and friends on lower levels were able to salvage their belongings, the third floor apartments, including mine, were severely damaged and burned by the fallen attic.
Never could I have imagined the pain of losing everything at once and within a matter of minutes. I realize that what I lost, other than Tilly, are just things. But at this moment, I realize how fortunate I was to have the home I did. It is difficult to try and grasp the reality that everything that made made my apartment a home is gone.
I have no idea what my next steps are and I am at a crossroad in this crisis. I have a place to stay until I figure out where to go next and many friends have graciously offered and provided their support.
The Red Cross also generously donated $500.00. However, my landlord has had minimal communication regarding the deposit and I feel that it may take them months to refund, if I get it at all. I did not have renters insurance. I have car, health, dental, vision insurance but I overlooked the renters insurance.
Thankfully, a month ago, I found a great job but I certainly am not in the financial position to be able to have first and last month’s rent, the deposit and the furnishings and clothing and the necessities to start all over.
I’ve always had difficulty asking for help and have always been successful in finding a way to make things work on my own. But I admit, I need help in this crisis. Any cash donation will help.
Thank you to everyone who has reached out with kind words and offering support.
The fire was on the news and can be found at the following link. I understand if whomever would like verification before donating.
