Autism Service Dog for Blake Dunton
Donation protected
Dear Friends of Blake,
We are Richard and Tracy Dunton and we are writing this appeal for our daughter, Blake Anne. We would like to provide her with an Autism Service Dog through Perfect Fit Canines, Inc. Blake is seven years old, and has Autism and Apraxia. Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. Apraxia is a speech sound disorder that affects the brain pathways responsible for planning the movement sequences involved in speech production. It results in distorting sounds, making inconsistent errors in speech, tone, stress and rhythm.
One major obstacle Blake has with her diagnosis is her inability to understand safety. She is an Eloper, which is an all too common problem among children with ASD. It is described as the urge to leave protected and safe surroundings – such as a home or school – without notifying anyone. Blake has eloped several times from school, from us at home and in public, and recently climbed the fence, racing down the street with no regard for traffic. This is a major concern for us, and we are desperate to keep her safe. Blake has been involved in intensive Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) therapy for several years to not only help her function, but to address this safety concern. Her board certified therapist has recommended we provide her with an Autism Service Dog to facilitate this need. After much research, we decided that Perfect Fit Canines, Inc. is the best fit for us. We love the process of matching the perfect dog to each individual client based upon that client’s specific needs.
Service dogs for children with an autism spectrum disorder provide companionship, improve social skills, improve verbal and non-verbal communication, facilitate interaction with the world around them, teach life skills, interrupt behaviors and calm emotional outbursts. Blake’s service dog would be specifically trained to meet her social, emotional and physical needs, and also act as a ballast to stop her from eloping, being tethered to her so that when she attempts to bolt the dog would resist and keep her near, alert us when she attempts to elope, and track her if she does succeed in running away.
We hope you will consider supporting our mission to secure an Autism Service Dog for Blake through Perfect Fit Canines, Inc. The total donation for her service dog is $13,000 and we are seeking aid in this cost. The amount goes directly toward the Autism Service Dogs extensive training and care, adoption costs, puppy vaccinations, cost of
housing while with trainer, cost of food while with trainer, spaying or neutering, trainer's fees, fees for Public Access Training, PA Service Certification, and family training. We were notified that a dog is available for Blake and time is of the essence. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Richard and Tracy Dunton
