Hi, I am the coach of the first ever Australian all women's para (sled) ice hockey team. We are attending the first ever Women's World Para Ice Hockey Championship in Slovakia in August. That's right...first ever. Men's/mixed para ice hockey has been in the Paralympics since 1996! But 2025, is the first time a Women's worlds is being held...with a view to having it become an event at the 2030 Paralympics in France. And Australia is going to be a part of it! Canada, USA, Great Britain, Norway, and Australia will be competing for the first ever Women's Para Gold.
Unfortunately, the funding for para ice hockey is minimal. The majority of the costs will be borne by the individual player...~$5000 each. And with the August date, not a lot of time to fundraise.
I am trying to support my players as much as I can with fundraising, sponsorship, hosting trivia nights, etc. and am now going to put my aging body on the line by doing a super-skate session! I will be skating at the Hunter Ice Skating Stadium from 10:00pm to 7:00am June 28/29, 2025. I will take a 10 min breaks every 60 mins...to rest my feet and have a hot beverage. I will be joined by two of my players, Lynda and Ash, and have others dropping in periodically to check on the legitimacy of the skate. I probably won't be able to move for three days afterwards, but it will be worth it!
Any donation will be greatly appreciated, and all funds go directly to the team to help cover flights, accommodation, etc. Australia has a real opportunity to make an impact in ice hockey on the world stage...thank you for being a part of it.
