Meet Austin! He will be 14 years old on New Year's Day! Austin is one of many boys who suffer from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy or DMD. This disease is the most common fatal genetic disorder diagnosed in childhood, affecting 1 in 3,500 males. DMD results in progressive weakness and loss of strenghth in the muscles. The progressive muscle weakness leads to serious medical problems, particularly issues with the heart and lungs. The life expectancy for these boys is typically late twenties.
A year ago Austin's strength in his arms began to decline rapidly! He can't do something as simple as lifting a bottle of water to his mouth! The GOOD news is there is an option available to Austin called the GoWing robotic arm system made by Kinova Robotics which would help him to perform many daily activities such as eating, drinking, personal care and reaching objects. The BAD news is the insurance companies and state Medicaid won't won't cover the cost!
Imagine if Austin was your child. You would do anything and everything you could to help him. There is no cure for DMD but YOU can help Austin greatly improve his quality of life!
