Austin’s Earicle
Sweet and loving Austin Collins was born four years ago without a right ear. The cost of reconstructive surgery for Austin is $60,000. Since it’s considered cosmetic it is not covered under the policy carried by his parents, Pam and Roy. Together they have initiated different fundraisers including collection of pop tabs as well as a golf outing this past summer to help raise funds. Every opportunity for them to collect and secure money will ensure they are one step closer to being able to schedule Austin’s surgery and ultimately give him the earicle he very much deserves.
For those unaware, Austin was born with a condition called Microtia and Atresia. Most people are not familiar with the condition of Microtia, which is a congenital deformity of the outer ear and doesn’t allow the ear to fully develop. This ultimately results in hearing impairment for Austin’s right ear. Microtia occurs in approximately 1 in 5000 births and can be treated with reconstructive surgery done by a specialized surgeon. It can involve two to four different surgeries separated by several months. Austin is a perfect candidate for this reconstructive surgery.
Extensive research has shown children with Microtia begin to notice the appearance of their ear is unlike those of other children between the ages of two and three. Eventually other children begin to notice and will likely begin to stare, make comments, or even tease a child with Microtia. This typically begins in preschool and/or kindergarten. Living with Microtia can result in both stress and anxiety, especially in social situations. When someone stares and/or makes comments regarding the appearance of an individual’s ear it can create long-term effects especially with self-esteem. Pam and Roy want to do everything they can to help minimize these risks and avoid any damage to Austin’s self-esteem.
Austin is a typical 4 year-old child full of energy and spunk. He loves to run, ride his bike, dance, and play. Austin’s older sister Caitlyn is his best friend and they often enjoy laughing and being silly together. At age 4, Austin may not care right now about what people think of his ear or even why they stare it. As he gets older and approaches school age, his family’s concern for his psychological wellbeing grows. They continue to makeall attempts to work with their insurance company to cover what they are willing to cover for costs. In the meantime, please consider helping raise the funds for Austin to have the reconstructive surgery that he very much deserves! #microtia #atresia #3Dsupor #Austinsearicle
