AUSLMAT Pedal Sri Lanka 2025– A Ride for Children's Health
In August 2025, our team of cycling enthusiasts, adventurers, and medical professionals will go on a 14-day, 460km charity cycling tour through Sri Lanka’s spectacular countryside. This unique charity ride is combined with the annual Australia Sri Lanka Medical Aid Team (AUSLMAT) medical mission.
This is more than just a ride—it’s a mission to raise funds to purchase medical equipment for:
✅ "Little Hearts Project" at Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children – largest specialised free of charge hospital and only paediatric cardiac surgery centre in Sri Lanka
✅ Sirimavo Bandaranaike Children’s Hospital, Peradeniya – second largest free of charge paediatric hospital in the central highlands of Sri Lanka
✅ Kamburugamuwa (Matara) Hospital Neonatal Unit – rural hospital in Sri Lanka’s Southern Province
WHY THIS CAUSE?
Sri Lanka’s healthcare system is in crisis due to economic instability and government funding shortages. With 80% of medical supplies imported, hospitals face critical equipment shortages, delayed surgeries, and power cuts that force doctors to operate under severe conditions. Since 2022, import restrictions have created a $220 million funding gap, leaving thousands of children without essential care. AUSLMAT PedaL Sri Lanka aims to help by funding and delivering life-saving medical equipment to hospitals in need.
ABOUT AUSLMAT (Australia Sri Lanka Medical Aid Team)
AUSLMAT is a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) and has Deductible Gift Register (DGR) status, making donations tax-deductible in Australia. Over the past 20 years, AUSLMAT has sent more than $10 million worth of medical equipment to Sri Lanka and has made 29 medical missions to provide teaching and training to doctors and staff in rural hospitals.
HOW DID PEDAL SRI LANKA BEGIN?
The initiative was founded by Kieran Michael, a physiotherapist at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Inspired by his family's deep connection to Sri Lanka and a visit to Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, Kieran saw firsthand the urgent need for medical resources. What started as a solo ride soon grew into a larger movement when his parents, Wesley and Christine, along with his brothers, Aidan and Luke, helped transform the idea into reality.
With support from Experiential Journeys, a specialist Sri Lankan eco-tourism company, the team developed a tour that would raise funds and also highlight the beauty of Sri Lanka. The Pedal Sri Lanka 2024 tour covered 1,350km of Sri Lanka’s coastline, with 27 amazing family and friends raising over AU$62,000—more than double their original goal—funding vital cardiac equipment for Lady Ridgeway Hospital. AUSLMAT’s long-standing commitment to improving Sri Lanka’s healthcare system made them the ideal charity partner for this cause.
