Hava (34), newly in love with Mo, is scheduled to have a fibroid removed in a routine procedure. After the operation, she wakes up to a terrible shock: her uterus was removed without any medical indication. Deprived of her femininity, she seeks justice, but what good is a guilty verdict when the damage is irreparable?
About the story
Hysterectomy, the removal of the uterus, is unfortunately a grim reality for many women in Germany. With over 130,000 procedures performed annually, it ranks among the most common surgeries in the field of gynecology. Alarmingly, experts estimate that up to 80% of these procedures are medically unnecessary. Women often find that hysterectomy is presented as a minor procedure. Comprehensive information about potential complications, both short- and long-term, is often provided only shortly before the surgery. However, the impact of this procedure extends far beyond physical effects. The uterus is considered a symbol of femininity and fertility. Losing the uterus can lead to infertility and can also trigger early onset menopause. Many women report feelings of emptiness and incompleteness after a hysterectomy. The psychological consequences can be severe, leading to loss of libido, depression, and a disturbed sense of self-worth.
In my short film "Aus der Mitte gerissen", I poignantly explore this issue. Hava's story highlights the helplessness and loss of autonomy that a hysterectomy can mean for a young woman. The unexpected loss of her uterus not only robs her of the chance to conceive but also shatters her self-image and identity. Processing this trauma poses enormous challenges for Hava. Her story touches on central questions of femininity, identity, and coping with an irreversible loss. While the pursuit of compensation may bring financial justice, it does not heal the emotional and physical damage.
About me
Born in 1985 in Mannheim as the daughter of a Turkish working-class family, I completed an acting training in 2010 at the renowned Otto Falckenberg School in Munich. In 2015, I participated in the Sarajevo Talent Campus. My films have been screened at various film festivals, such as Locarno, Sarajevo, and the Berlinale. In 2023, I won the Grimme Prize and the New German Cinema Promotion Prize at the Hof International Film Festival with the ensemble of the productions "Im Feuer - Sisters Apart" and "Rohbau." Currently, I can be seen on stage at the Bavarian State Opera. In 2019/2020, I received a scholarship from the HFF Screenplay Workshop Munich for my family comedy "Anna, Vater, Kind," followed by further work scholarships for "Malina," a coming-of-age drama, and "Rüzgar Baba," a family drama. I live as a freelance filmmaker in Munich and am planning my directorial debut with "Aus der Mitte gerissen."
My goals
This short film and Hava's story is a plea to not regard hysterectomy as a routine procedure, but to take the far-reaching consequences for women seriously. It is crucial that women are thoroughly informed and can make the decision for or against a hysterectomy in an informed and autonomous manner. With this project, I aim to stimulate a societal discussion.
My team
I have assembled a strong team of talented filmmakers who are graciously supporting me in my project.
