Help Jack Keep His Leg!
Donation protected
My sweet 2-year old pup, Jack, sustained a pretty serious leg injury on Thursday April, 30. He was playing in the backyard, as he usually does in the evening, and when I let him in he was limping and not bearing any weight on his left rear leg.
We immediately drove to the VCA Northwood Animal Hospital in Anderson to have him evaluated. They performed a physical exam and took x-rays to check for fractures. They attempted to pop his leg back into place, but it wouldn't stay.
Jack was diagnosed with a cranio-dorsal coxofemoral luxation. This pretty much means the ligament at the head of his femur is torn and isn't able to keep his leg in socket.
The VCA referred us to MedVet in Carmel, and Jack was seen by Dr. Martin on Monday, May 4. Dr. Martin suggested two surgical options for Jack. Option A, which is called a toggle pin procedure, would give Jack the largest range of motion and use of that leg. Unfortunately, that procedure has a better success rate the sooner it is completed. Even then, it carries a 10-15 percent fail rate, meaning Jack would need a second surgery.
As of now, we are working toward a Femoral Head Ostecotomy, or FHO Surgery. This surgery will allow Jack use of his leg, but it will be a little more limited than before. The FHO surgery consists of removing the ball of the hip. The ligament around the hip is then stitched up. While this heals, scar tissue will form in the joint to prevent rubbing of bone on bone. A "false joint" is then formed, which is pain free.
All I care about is Jack's quality of life. He is taking Gabapentin and Carprofen daily to control his pain. He is still his sweet, goofy, loving self.
The estimated cost of the FHO Surgery at MedVet in Carmel is between $2800 and $3500. They require a $3000 deposit to schedule the surgery.
We are headed to Eaton, OH on Tuesday, May 12 for a second opinion and estimate.
Due to COVID-19, I've experienced a change in employment. With bars and restaurants closed or working at a limited capacity, I've lost part time income. My full time job has also initiated unpaid furlough weeks, which has also resulted in additional income loss. I'm also in the process of moving as my lease is ending soon.
I have a new part time job starting this weekend, and I've started a few food delivery gigs. I'm hustling to put funds together for Jack, but with time being an extremely important factor in the quality of his recovery, I am here to ask for help.
All donations will go directly to Jack's care and recovery, with receipts and invoices posted. If any additional funds are collected beyond what is needed for Jack, they will be donated directly to Muncie ARF.
Any donation is appreciated more than you know. Even if you can't donate, please share with others!
