August Fund Forever Foster Vet Care

Donation protected
The August Fund for Alaska Racing Dogs  provides a humane alternative for mushers to place their dogs in loving homes. Fans of professional dog mushing and others are quite proud to adopt a dog that has such a history of miles and is generally well socialized and highly trained.

Forever Fosters: While we find homes for quite a few retirees, there are some because of advanced age, or special medical needs who are harder to place. These we care for in a loving home provided by founders of our organization. We have a wonderful veterinarians who provide low or no cost services, but for surgeries we do have to cover at least half the cost. That's where we need your help now! The $2500 will cover immediate needs for four of our Forever Fosters who need surgery: one to repair a leg injury, and three are in need of removal of cancerous or potentialy cancerour lumps with biopsies included. We appreciate your generousity in helping us provide a wonderful quality of life for our senior canine athletes - living legends of the Iditarod or Yukon Quest Trail.

Mission: To provide veterinary care, and loving retirement homes for racing sled dogs from Iditarod, Yukon Quest, and professional sprint kennels.

Who: The August Fund--A foundation for Alaska's retiring professional racing sled dogs. Helping to rehome and/or provide vet care for retirees from Iditarod racing kennels. Applying for 501c3 status.

What: The Iditarod is known as the last great race on earth. More than 60 teams, comprised of one human driver of the dog sled (musher) and 16 dogs take off annually from Willow Alaska for a 1000 mile trek to Nome. The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is now in it's 42nd year.

Why: When you multiply 16 dogs by the number of teams entered each year, there will be roughly 1000 Alaskan Huskies on that trail competing to be the first team to Nome. What happens when a dog get too old to race, or has a career-ending injury, or even doesn't make the team?

When: Now! Many responsible mushers work with their fans to rehome their dogs whose racing career has ended, while others drop them on already over-burdened local shelters...or worse.

Where: Our foundation works mainly in Alaska with individual mushers, shelters and other rescue organizations to act as a clearing house for Iditarod veteran dogs and to find appropriate homes for them after their racing days are done. We have and do rehome many dogs Outside of Alaska.
