Augusta, KS Downtown Veteran's Memorial

Home to the 226th Engineer Company of the Kansas National Guard, the Kansas Museum of Military History, and Augusta Memorial V.F.W. Post 6746, Augusta has a rich and proud military heritage.  Our problem is that we lack a dedicated space for veterans, service families, and the general public to honor and contemplate the service and sacrifice of our uniformed personnel and the liberties and values they fight to preserve.

This project originated with the Augusta Leonard Whitehill American Legion Post 189 years ago after two family members of deceased veterans donated startup money and a bronze battlefield "soldier's cross" to create a veteran’s memorial to honor their relatives who passed away serving our country.  Working together with the City of Augusta, we developed a master plan for a brand new park in downtown Augusta, Kansas that will feature the veteran’s memorial among other amenities.

The City of Augusta will construct the decorative pavement and sidewalks for the new memorial by July 2021.  Our veteran's group has been able to raise about $13,000 for the service branch monuments so far, be we need about $40,000-$45,000 to complete our grand design.  Money from this fundraiser will be applied to the purchase of decorative monuments to honor the different service branches.  Additionally, we plan to work with the Augusta Historical Society to recreate/restore the old Augusta veterans name listing sign that used to exist on the old American Legion Building downtown before it fell into disrepair and was largely destroyed.

When finished, the new downtown park and veteran’s memorial will serve as a beautiful place of honor for Augusta's service families to remember and celebrate their loved ones.  The facility will also revitalize a blighted, vacant property at the entryway to Augusta’s downtown and create an engaging new space for residents of and visitors to Augusta’s Red Brick District.

Please help us bring this long awaited project to reality.  Thank you!
