August in Oakland with AXIS Dance
Who am I?
I am an interdisciplinary artist who has spent over a decade making and showing work in New York. My home is mainly in the worlds where experimental dance and performance intersect, though I am also a widely published writer. The majority of my work centers on navigating the world with identities of difference.
What am I up to?
I am currently developing a new piece that explores queerness, disability, language, and choreography in relationship to power and consent. I have been offered a scholarship to study with AXIS Dance, one of the leading mixed-ability modern dance companies in the U.S., in August 2017. This is a major move for me, from performing as an artist with a disability in mostly non-disabled contexts, to working among dancers who share this difference.
Why do I need your support?
In March, I had the honor of presenting a performance alongside Marc Brew, the Artistic Director of AXIS Dance. I was supercharged by our connection, and I want to continue to learn from him at the company's home-base in Oakland. In the time when I am not with AXIS, I plan to expand my presence in Oakland with a few intimate performances and readings. Making a contribution will fund my flight, ground travel and expenses, supporting this learning experience and artistic expansion/homecoming.
