Meet Auggie, our 8 month old Australian Cattle Dog! He was born on Michael and I’s wedding day and is the absolute light of our lives. Auggie has had pronounced hip dysplasia since he was about 4 months old. Our vet recommended that once he was finished growing we see a orthopedic specialist to get x-rays done and discuss treatment options since he is so young. He has been on anti-inflammatories and pain medication for about four months now to help him still be a puppy, so he can play and socialize during this crucial period of his life.
The worst cases of hip dysplasia make themselves known in puppyhood. Though most cases of hip dysplasia end the same way (with pain and immobility), the progression varies widely depending on the degree of malformation/misalignment. Thankfully, Auggie can be treated at a younger age by way of preventing the pain and immobility that will inevitably manifest. We don't have to wait until his hips have reached end-stage levels before intervening surgically. Because of how young he is, we are trying to get a total hip replacement for Auggie (in which the entire joint is replaced with artificial components made specifically for pets) at its lowest end is 4,500 itself. Exams, xrays, surgery, anesthesia, bloodwork, medication, post op care like physical therapy and maintenance. We’re looking at almost 10,000 in medical expenses.
Insurance will not cover his injury because it’s considered pre-existing. No dog should have to suffer due to not being able to afford medical treatment but that is the harsh reality we’re currently facing. Auggie has the most playful disposition and even as he is hurting he still greets everyone with a smile and tail wag. His medical bills add up quickly and just in the last two weeks we’ve already spent almost a thousand dollars on him.
All money raised will go directly to his Veterinary Specialists and paying off his medical bills.
