Callie’s emergency surgery
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Kiersten and my cat Callie had an unexpected paw injury. I first noticed her paw looking abnormal on April 29th and brought her to the vet the very next day. The veterinarian examined it and deemed it to be a sprain or hairline fracture and insisted to forego X-rays despite me feeling something more serious was going on; they felt a more conservative approach with pain medications for several weeks would be enough. Within the following week, it got much worse and I brought her in immediately to get X-rays. The veterinarian stated something abnormal was on it and thought it was broken but wanted to send it to the radiologist and orthopedic to confirm. After waiting three days for the the results, they finally came back and said the X-rays were clean. I sent in a video of her walking on it and they determined it was carpal hyperextension. Due to the urgency of the injury, I had to quickly find an orthopedic who could see her and do a consult. On May 19th she went to Veterinary Emergency Specialty Hospital in South Deerfield. They confirmed the hyperextension and needs surgery.
Due to the few misdiagnoses, surgery is the only option to preserve almost full mobility in the paw. It is too late to splint it and do physical therapy for it.
The surgery will be fusing the two bones together to help give her more support and making it so her paw doesn’t bend at an 80 degree angle (I’ve attached a video of her walking on the paw to show how severely and abnormally it bends). It will be followed by 8 weeks of splints, re-splinting is 1-2x a week, and physical therapy.
I rescued Callie at only three months and we’ve been inseparable since. She has served as my ESA for the last four years I’ve had her. It is my responsibility to give her the best possible chance of living out the rest of her life without it bothering her or restricting her movement. But more importantly, she deserves the very best as she’s my best friend, child, and partner in crime all in one.
I am a recent graduate student with my masters in animal policy and behavior and cannot carry this financial burden alone. I have been working with animals for the past six years in animal shelters, veterinary clinics, volunteering with rehabilitating wildlife, and dog training. I am now professionally dog training, walking & pet sitting. I have dedicated my life for bettering animals’ lives and I’m hoping to do the same for my cat with your help.
Please consider donating to help my little queen. Any and every donation and/or sharing of this go fund me would be greatly appreciated.
