About Me:
Hello, friends. My name is Saeed Pourkay. I am the chef and owner of A Taste of Persia, a humble food business offering homemade Persian cuisine - and with it, Persian culture - to the people of New York City and the surrounding areas. I rent the small kitchen and window kiosk of a pizza shop in busy Midtown Manhattan. I cater events and parties and, every winter, I rent a booth at the Union Square Holiday Market where I serve my signature Persian soups to the cold and hungry holiday shoppers of the city.
I am following my bliss, as Joseph Campbell encouraged us all to do. After many years in the graphic arts industry, I found myself unfulfilled. I left the business and set out to discover what truly brings me joy: cooking for others.
At A Taste of Persia, we make traditional Persian foods from scratch, using the finest, richest ingredients. Persian food is known for its complex flavors and delectable combinations of spices, fruits, vegetables, meats and grains. The specialty dishes we serve are fresh, delicious, healthy, and subtly spiced. They are also incredibly labor intensive and expensive to make.
My Urgent Goal:
The rising costs of fresh ingredients, equipment and rent have all made it hard to afford my usual booth in the Union Square Holiday Market this year. With only 2 weeks before the market begins, I find myself short. This endeavor has always been a labor of love but now, more than ever, I find myself struggling to make it.
How You Can Help:
Breaking bread together with family and friends is an important aspect of Persian culture. To me, New Yorkers and the people from the surrounding areas that comprise my customers are my family and friends. Help me raise the funds I need to secure my booth at the Union Square Holiday Market so that I can continue to serve delicious Persian food to New Yorkers and visitors from around the world, this holiday season.
