At Cafe Envoy, Everything is Cool is a student short film by Moss Johnston, a Senior in the Film BFA at SUNY Purchase. Since we don’t get any funding from the school, we have to fundraise these costly items ourselves.

Director’s Bio:

Moss Johnston is an American-Australian filmmaker, and the writer/director of AT CAFE ENVOY, EVERYTHING IS COOL. His work often deals with surrealist historical fiction, drawing on the collective cultural understanding of the past to create tableaus that feel both deeply familiar and totally unique. With an eye for drawing out strange, dreamlike images in everyday life, Johnston is enthusiastic about ENVOY, looking to combine his visual palette with new musical and production elements. His prior film, STAND ATOP THE SHIPWRECK AND COUNT THE DROWNED SAILORS will soon be playing at the Fargo Fantastic Film Festival.

Moss’s Statement:

In approaching At Cafe Envoy, Everything Is Cool, my main goal was attempting to synthesize my ongoing education in political and economic theory and history with a certain feeling of chaos and hopelessness that has permeated the culture without a clear outlet. When faced with the financial and ecological collapse that bears down on the world, many, myself included, struggle to imagine any change or improvement that can come, and the only future that is promised to us has a significant price that must be paid first.

I hope that this film is able to exorcise these feelings, allowing the audience to experience a release by having that doomed feeling reflected directly at them without concealment or misdirect. However, I am ultimately hopeful for a better world if we are able to break out of the cycle of exploitation and degradation. I want this film to inspire my audience to think big in terms of changing the world, and inspire the imagination for a better and kinder society.
