Asylum - Film Fund
My name is Neil West, a feature film writer and director. This crowdfunding campaign is for a film called Asylum. An immigration story focusing on what unites rather than divides us. An antidote to the pernicious way in which the perceptions of immigration are exploited for political gain. Our film is the story of Martha, a woman who discovers an unconscious man washed up on the shoreline. A refugee trying to smuggle his family to safety, but in a world where all borders are militarised and people live under the shadow of a police state. Martha's impulsive choice to rescue him sets in motion a series of far reaching and dangerous consequences that will impact not only her, but the people she cares most about.
This is a tale set in an alternative version of our reality. An oppressive world in the mould of The Man in the High Castle or The Handmaids Tale. It's a story that feels relevant to where we are in the world right now. That said, it's about what unites rather than divides people, and the way that shared tragedy sometimes has the capacity to restore people's faith in the world.
I've been fortunate enough to assemble a wonderful cast and crew together to bring this story to the screen. It's a short proof of concept drama. If it's made we will use it to help bring this story to the screen as a feature film. As you can no doubt tell from the text above, this is a story that means a lot to me. But also to the team of creatives we have working on it. I feel it's vital that art can help reflect back to us the society in which we live, and also act as a cautionary tale for where it might lead.

Dan is a feature film director and producer. He has multiple feature films and work for television that have won awards and critical praise. His 2015 feature THE MAN INSIDE starred the acclaimed Peter Mullen (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) and David Harewood (The Night Manager).
