Mercy College/Aonad Loch Gile Sligo is currently fundraising to develop a new AstroTurf pitch. This will ensure that our school has an all-weather pitch for sports and activities, which we can access all year round.

The overall cost of completing our project will be in the region of €500,000. We have raised money through several school-based fundraisers, but we need to raise a significant amount of money to achieve our target.

The Mercy Order has proudly provided primary education in Sligo since 1849, and secondary education since 1946. Prior to this the Mercy sisters tended to the local Sligo community during the Cholera epidemic and the Great Famine. The school has grown from strength to strength since 1946 and has always had a strong focus on sports. In 1971 the school won the European Cadette Basketball Championships and went on to win the Senior European Basketball Championships the following year. The school now provides several sporting opportunities for students, including Gaelic, Soccer, Hockey, Basketball, Athletics, and Water Sports.

In 2017 Mercy College introduced the provision of second-level education through the medium of Gaeilge, founding Aonad Loch Gile, the first second level Gaelscoil in Sligo/Leitrim. Mercy College/Aonad Loch Gile continues the long Mercy history of supporting and assisting others locally and globally through our sponsorship of two schools in Tanzania and Kenya.

We ask others to support us by helping our students have year-round access to outdoor sports.

We are calling on all pupils, parents, and friends, past and present, in every corner of the world, to help us raise as much as possible to complete the AstroTurf pitch.

We are also calling on the community of Sligo, in which Mercy College has played an integral role in teaching and community service for almost 200 years, to support our fundraising efforts.

We are starting our fundraising drive with this Gofundme page, and we are planning Autumn events, including 24-hour sports marathons and sports blitzes for past pupils. So, if you are a past pupil or teacher, pull out your old gym shorts and skirts and dust off your hockey sticks because we will be calling you!

The fundraising committee, staff and pupils of the school would like to thank you sincerely for supporting our cause.
