May 3rd of 2019 is a day Gino and Jennifer will never forget. They received a call from the Doctor telling them that due to complications of preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome, they were going to deliver the baby. Even though she was only 23 weeks along there was no choice, Jennifer's life was on the line. It was a panic that is not easily forgotten.
Astrid Mariette Ascani was born on May 3rd at only 14.8 ounces and 10 inches long. The odds were stacked against her.
Astrid lived in the NICU for 130 days. During her NICU stay she aspirated her food and developed pneumonia and an MSSA staph infection. She developed retinopathy from the oxygen she needed to breathe and had to have laser eye surgery. She has been diagnosed with chronic lung disease and will be on oxygen for at least the first year of her life. She also recently had dual hernia surgery. The odds of her surviving until discharged was only 5%.
Despite those odds, after nearly 5 months Astrid was discharged. Gino and Jennifer have remained positive and continue to do everything in their power to keep their baby girl alive and well. However, the financial burden that has been placed on them is astronomical. Between the many months in NICU, countless tests, 15 blood transfusions, numerous procedures, and many surgeries Jennifer has still not returned to work. At this point Astrid is very susceptible to getting sick and she can stay this way for another 8-12 weeks. Jennifer will not return to work until Astrid has a clean bill of health and can be put in a medical daycare. Gino has been doing all that he can to keep the countless bills paid by picking up overtime shifts at the fire house, resulting in missed time with his little Warrior Princess.
Gino and Jenn have gone above and beyond for those in their community and it is time we all rally together for them. They should be able to focus all of their energy on Astrid and provide her with the proper care she needs to live a long, healthy life.
Please donate what you can and SHARE this fundraiser. More importantly INVITE your friends. Their baby girl is a blessing and a warrior. WE LOVE HER! She definitely has a story to tell the world.
God Bless all and thank you ahead of time for anything you can do! No amount is too small
