Hi, my name is Rosemary Penn and I am Chair of the Patients Participation Group at Bosvena Health in Bodmin, Cornwall.
As someone who has suffered with asthma since childhood, I know how important it is to get a quick diagnosis and any necessary medication.
Here is a little background on asthma and the reason Bosvena Health would benefit from having a FENO machine
Asthma is the second most prevalent chronic condition in Cornwall with 7.4% of the population diagnosed, compared to a national average of 6.5%.
Bosvena Health has a prevalence rate of 8% which is above the national average. This could be due to various reasons. Our practice is based in one of the more deprived neighbourhoods. Social inequality links the more deprived to a higher prevalence of asthma and mortality rates
Accurate and timely diagnosis is important in making sure people with respiratory conditions can access the care they need as soon as possible because undiagnosed or poorly managed asthma causes exacerbations, absences and affects mental and physical health.
New NICE Guidelines outlines a robust and evidence-based framework for diagnosing, monitoring, and managing asthma. One part of this guidance is the use of FENO (Fractional exhaled Nitric Oxide) testing, to assess airway inflammation.
It is difficult to put an actual number on how many patients need a diagnosis or are undiagnosed. Bosvena currently has around 314 patients with a potential respiratory condition.
The total cost is £2500, which the NHS doesn't fund. As a group of patients, who meet every month to try and help patients in difficulties, we are asking if you would consider donating something to such an important and worthy cause. Every penny helps. Thank you for reading.
