I am the mother of a beautiful and very smart 14-year-old girl. My daughter, Jessica,was born with an orthopedic condition called Arthrogryposis. She has had 12 surgeries in her short life. Her condition affects her arms and legs. She has lack of muscle development in all 4 limbs which causes joint contractures.
In summation, Jessica needs help with dressing, undressing, eating and transitioning. Our biggest fear is her falling down. If she falls, she cannot get up. This is scary for us and for her. She can be left home alone but if she falls, she cannot get up without a piece of furniture. As with any teenage child, she wants her independence.
She really needs an assistance dog to help her with her safety and independence. This dog could open doors for her, help her with her clothing and overall safety at school and home. Jessica is just starting high school and is such a bright child she will be eventually heading to college. An assistant dog could help her now and in her future education and independence.
