My name is Vanessa Flores.

On April 8th, I had the blessing of getting married in Utah (where I live) with the company of my family from Guatemala. After the celebration, on Monday, April 10th, my family had a connecting flight to California. Since their flight to Guatemala was leaving the next day, my family (consisting of my father, mother, younger sister, two aunts, an uncle, my cousin, and my grandmother) decided to spend the rest of the day in San Diego.

Unfortunately, on their way to San Diego, one of the cars transporting part of my family was involved in an accident that took the life of my dear aunt, Patricia Elizabeth Flores de Soto, at only 33 years old. In the car that suffered the accident were: my aunt, Lorena Flores; my uncle (Elizabeth's husband), Daniel Soto; my cousin (son of Daniel and Elizabeth), José Iván, and my grandmother, Patricia Flores.

Thank God, my aunt Lorena and my uncle Daniel had minor injuries and will be physically fine in the coming weeks. Unfortunately, my cousin and my grandmother were not so lucky.

My cousin, José Iván, at only 3 years old, had a fracture in two places on his mandible and for that reason, he had a procedure that placed a device to stabilize his jaw. This device allows little movement of his jaw so that it will stabilize and heal. For that reason, he will have to have a liquid and purée diet for a period of about 4-6 weeks. At that time the doctors hope that the fractures in his jaw would have healed and the device will come out. He also suffered stretching of the ligaments in his neck and will have to wear a hard collar for a few weeks, which is very uncomfortable for him. He will require follow-ups with his pediatrician, and maxillofacial surgeon in the upcoming weeks.

My grandmother, on the other hand, suffered multiple fractures including various ribs, her sternum, wrist, and vertebrae. She also had a punctured lung, which made it hard for her to breathe. She underwent a procedure to stabilize her rib cage, and wrist, and to add a chest tube to help her lung re-expand. She will need prolonged chest physiotherapy, and physical therapy to help her learn to stabilize herself in the setting of her rib fractures.

Considering that this happened in the United States, with my family being tourists, the expenses for the procedures detailed above are astronomically large to cover entirely by ourselves (the entire Flores family). So we find ourselves in need of your help. All your donations will go directly toward the immediate and future medical expenses of both my cousin and my grandmother as well as other future expense of other kinds. Every penny counts, and we will be eternally grateful for your kindness in these difficult times. If you are unable to donate, we appreciate you sharing this post and your prayers for my family.

Mi nombre es Vanessa Flores,

El día 8 de abril, tuve la bendición de casarme en Utah (lugar dónde vivo) con la compañía de mi familia de Guatemala. Luego de la celebración, el lunes 10 de abril, mi familia tuvo un vuelo de conexión en California. Ya que su vuelo hacia Guatemala salía el día siguiente, mi familia (compuesta por mi padre, madre, mi hermana menor, dos tías, un tío, mi primo y mi abuela) decidieron pasar el resto del día en San Diego.

Lastimosamente, en su camino a San Diego, uno de los carros transportando a parte de mi familia se encontró en un accidente que acabó con la vida de mi querida tía, Patricia Elizabeth Flores de Soto, teniendo tan solo 33 años. En el carro que sufrío el accidente se encontraba: mi tía, Lorena Flores; mi tío (esposo de Elizabeth), Daniel Soto; mi primo (hijo de Daniel y Elizabeth), José Iván y mi abuela, Patricia Flores.

Gracias a Dios, mi tía, Lorena, y mi tío, Daniel, se encontraron con lesiones leves y estarán físicamente bien en próximas semanas. Desafortunadamente, mi primo y mi abuela no tuvieron la misma suerte.

Mi primo, José Iván, con tan solo 3 años, sufrió fracturas en su mandíbula en dos lugares distintos. Por esa razón tuvo un procedimiento que fijó un aparato en su mandíbula que no permite mucho movimiento. Debido a este procedimiento el tendrá que comer una dieta de líquidos y purés por un periodo de 4-6 semanas. Después de ese tiempo los doctores esperan que sus fracturas sanen y el aparato en su boca podrá ser removido. También sufrió daño a los ligamentos de su cuello y por esa razón tendrá que portar un collarín por varias semanas, lo cual es incómodo para él. Necesitará seguimiento con su pediatra y un cirujano maxilofacial en las próximas semanas. 

Mi abuela, por otra parte, sufrió varia fracturas incluyendo daño a múltiples costillas, esternón, vertebras, y muñeca. También sufrió perforación a uno de sus pulmones, lo cual hace que le cueste respirar. Ell tuvo una cirugía que permitió estabilizar su caja torácica, su muñeca, y recibió inserción de un tubo torácico que le ayudará a su pulmón a re-expanderse. Necesitará largo tiempo de fisioterapia pulmonar y terapia física para ayudarle a saber estabilizarse dado a la instabilidad torácica por sus fracturas.

Teniendo en cuenta que esto sucedio en Estados Unidos, siendo mi familia turistas, los gastos de los procedimientos detallados arriba son astronomicamente grandes para cubrir en su totalidad por nosotros (toda la familia Flores). Por lo que nos encontramos con la necesidad de su ayuda.

Todas sus donaciones irán directamente hacia los gastos medicos immediatos y futuros tanto de mi primo como de mi abuela así como futuros gastos de otros tipos. Cada centavo cuenta y estaremos eternamente agradecidos por su bondad en estos momentos tan dificiles.
