Nicholas Neufville affectionately known as Soapman by his friends, students, the Calabar family and the track and field fraternity was a past student and the horizontal jumps coach at Calabar High School.
Like a true lion, Soapman zealously answered the call of Calabar, to become a teacher, a coach, and a mentor to Calabar students.
Under his over 10-year tutelage he led many students to represent school and country with most moving on to taking up scholarships in the events. Soapman often used his stern, firm approach to his students. He would also intersperse it with a kinder, calmer approach. Soapman would place his arm around his student and walk with him along the long Jump runway explaining and demonstrating his instructions in a calm demeaner. And, when his student got his jump right, he would quickly scream congratulatory remarks “That’s a better jump…that’s what you are to do…come, let us try again and make it better”.
Above all his achievements and exploits at Calabar, he will be remembered as one who brought laughter and joy to everyone.
Soapman leaves behind his fourteen-year-old daughter, a second form high school student, whose aspiration is to be a lawyer.
He practiced and taught our students good values: dedication, discipline, respect for others, respect for self, focus, humility, teamwork, keep trying, ‘never-say-die’.
“First Ever Gold at Champs was in Triple Jump, first ever National Trip was in Triple jump, scholarship was due to triple jump”, says Damar Robinson, former Captain of the Calabar track team.
“Love you coach Soap & I will never forget everything you have done for me; without you I wouldn’t be here “Jullane A Walker former athlete of Calabar who is presently on scholarship in the United States.
Though Nicholas is no longer with us physically, his roar lives on through the lives he has impacted. May you find eternal rest along the banks of the ancient river, in the pride of lions.
Here Sir, Here Sir, so you answered near or far. Here sir, Here sir, at the call of Calabar!
