Assisting Avigail
Donation protected
Avigail ("Avi") is a vivacious, spunky 5-year-old who loves dance, school, church, & her family.
When she was about 2 years old, Avi's family noticed discoloration on her side and took her to the doctor. Since then, they have had many appointments seeking answers as other patches have developed. Last July, Avi underwent a MRI and biopsies to find out what’s going on.
The biopsies revealed that she has Granulomatous Mycosis Fungoides, an extremely rare form of Cutaneous T-cell Lymphoma. Avi’s cancer is even more rare in children and is, short of a miracle, incurable; she will need lifelong care.
A PET scan revealed that Avi’s cancer is stage 1, for which we are all immensely grateful, but Avi's family has had to fight tooth & nail for her care. Because her cancer is so rare, few doctors treat it. The nearest treatment center is in Boston, which is out-of-network. Every time Avi receives treatment with Boston providers, they have to seek a prior authorization from insurance, which is time-consuming & cumbersome.
Currently, Avi is receiving phototherapy 2-3 times a week (in Concord, NH and sometimes in Lebanon, NH) & is using steroid ointments. If phototherapy is a successful treatment, the family will have the opportunity to purchase a Lightbox, which she can use at home instead of having to travel. There is a risk of disease developing from phototherapy, but it’s still the best option for treatment right now.
Insurance does not cover the full cost of Avi’s treatment and annual out-of-pocket costs are starting and will continue to mount. Cost of care (appointments, phototherapy, light box), cost of lost wages for treatment, and even transportation costs are all part of the equation.
Our first request is that you pray for Avi, for her family, and for all the providers working to help her.
Secondly, may I ask you to please consider donating to Avi’s treatment? No donation is too small. Any donation is welcome, & 100% of donations received will be used to fund Avi’s care. You could donate here, or if you prefer, send a check directly to "Avigail Chevalier" (it will go into her account).
Thank you so much!
