Assisting Adrian Corker for a Full Recovery

A week ago, I was excited about my afternoon. I was scheduled to have a photo shoot with Adrian Corker, one of my former first grade students from Hamilton Elementary.  I needed some head shots taken, and he was going to meet me at my office at the Griffith Family Foundation. As I was waiting for him to arrive, I happened to step outside of my office and was automatically locked out. The only other way into the office was to go through a side door, but that was behind a huge automatic gate which could be opened with a “clicker” that was in my purse inside the office.

After a few calls with no luck for a way to get in, Adrian arrived, and I shared my predicament. There was a skinny little area that someone could slide through, but that was not a possibility for us. Now Adrian, who loves his “Dr. G”, was trying to decide how we were going to get in. Having been in the military for 16 years, and quite physically fit, he decided he was going to get over that fence. A passerby helped him to climb on a 3-foot pole adjacent to the fence. Adrian calculated his jump and went for it.

The landing was not what he planned. He quickly said that he thought he had broken something. I called 911 to say that he was injured and needed help and also called his wife. The ambulance arrived as well as the Fire Department, but Adrian was behind the fence and no one could get to him. Thankfully, a fireman got over the fence with a ladder and used the side door to gain entrance to the office. Once inside, I was able to get the infamous “clicker” and open the gate so that Adrian could receive assistance from the EMT’s.

To make a long story short, this amazing man, who I have known since he was a six-year-old, took it upon himself to help me. And with that action, he shattered his left heel and fractured his right knee. For a week now, he has been hospitalized, has gone through one surgery and is waiting for one more pending a reduction of swelling in his heel.

Adrian is a wonderful husband and father who works hard at Norfolk Southern. He is a man of God and has incredible faith. During all this time he has worked very hard trying to convince me that he is okay and will be playing ball again in 3-6 months.

However, I cannot begin to fathom the medical costs that he will be incurring with these injuries and the extent of the rehab and recovery that is going to be necessary for Adrian to get back to his normal activities. I have started this GoFundMe page in hopes that this community will help me to help him and his family. Last Thursday I asked my Facebook Friends for prayer. Now, I am asking for some financial assistance to help this amazing man, who still loves his first-grade teacher.
