Assistance for Lexy

Many of you have heard this story about our Oberlin hometown girl, but in case you have not, here is some information about it.

Late Tuesday evening, July 20, 2021 around 9:30pm mountain time, Alexys Muehlenkamp (20) and her boyfriend Jaah (21) were traveling on I-25 in Colorado Springs and struck a deer.

The airbags were deployed on impact, but Lexy and Jaah were okay and pulled over to the far edge off of the interstate. Lexy and Jaah got out of her vehicle to assess the damage and to see if the deer was nearby. Lexy immediately FaceTimed her mom Becky Brown to let her know what happened. Becky told her if her vehicle was drivable to go ahead and take the exit close by, then call 911 to get highway patrol on their way to the scene. In that moment, Lexy was standing in front of her car and Jaah was off to the side of it when another car slammed into Lexy's at 90mph which in turn struck both she and Jaah.

Of course this was a very terrifying event for Becky to witness through the phone. Lexy's phone had been dropped and Becky was left helpless trying to call out to her daughter or anyone there not knowing exactly what had just happened. After trying to reach law enforcement through another friend's phone for 35 minutes, an EMT who had been called to the scene discovered Lexy's phone on the ground and was able to let Becky know that both Lexy and Jaah had been taken by ambulances to the area hospitals. Becky and her husband Ray left Oberlin as soon as possible that night to head to Colorado Springs, a four hour drive. Meanwhile, a close friend of the family who lives in Colorado Springs went to the hospital and got to speak with and comfort Lexy. She let Becky know that Lexy had two broken legs and was headed for surgery that night on her right leg. Becky's brother had called the area hospitals and discovered that Jaah had been taken to a different hospital than Lexy.

Becky and Ray got to Colorado Springs and were able to see both kids on Wednesday. They ended up staying until Saturday to be a support for Lexy through her blood tranfusions, more surgery and to comfort her the best they could. Becky and Ray returned home to Oberlin Saturday so Ray could stay and get their home ready for Lexy's return. Becky returned to Colorado Springs on Sunday to be there for Lexy who had a surgery scheduled for her left leg.

Jaah had sustained major injuries to his face and his eye socket had to be relocated through surgery on Wednesday. He is still sedated as he is recovering. Lexy's major injuries were all sustained below the waist with both knees crushed and right femur bone broken and additional injuries to her legs. She will be spending a long time recovering from them but we have faith she will overcome the challenges she will face.

We are asking for your donations to help during this time for the family's travel and hotel expenses as they do not have a timeline to know when Lexy will be able to return home. Also, their home will need to have adjustments made to it to accomadate for a hospital bed and wheelchair access.

Funds for these kinds of expenses are something we do not want them to have to worry about.
The family is so thankful for the miracle to have both Lexy and Jaah come out alive after such a tragic accident.
They are also very grateful to the friends, family and others who have reached out to them through prayers, well wishes and help during this week.

Any donated amount would be greatly appreciated and the family is also asking for continued prayers for healing, comfort and peace for both Lexy and Jaah as their lives have been forever changed.

Let's bless this family as best we can!

Thank you!
