Assistance after my mom's life changing stroke.

On December 15th, 2023, my mother's world shifted drastically as she faced the life-altering impact of a stroke. She has navigated the challenges of being an independent Black woman in America, working tirelessly in jobs that offered minimal insurance and benefits, none providing a living wage. My mother has always had to work, when we were children, she’d wake us up for school, and we wouldn’t see her until the next morning because she worked so hard to provide whatever she could.

The stroke has rendered her unable to continue the physical jobs she dedicated herself to for so long. Now, facing immobility, she is confronted with a new reality.

Although we've applied for SSI and disability, the assistance process in America is a lengthy one, spanning from six months to a year. Compounded by the fact that her previous living arrangement is no longer suitable, we find ourselves in a challenging situation. As she embarks on the path of rehabilitation, I wish for her sole focus to be on recovery, not worrying about having a roof over her head.
