Mom's Nursing Home Bill
Donation protected
Mom was diagnosed with stage 4b lung cancer. We took care of her at home as long as possible. My brother sacrificed 3 months of work to help take care of her. We finally made the decision to place her in a nursing home close by so my brother could get back to work. The nursing home accepted her application and said Medicaid would cover the expenses. I signed paperwork and we moved her in. Ten days later, we are meeting with the financial manager of the nursing home telling us her Medicaid will not pay for the nursing home and we are now responsible for the bill. We moved her back home and hired sitters for the hours no one could be home.
She was so happy and full of life in the nursing home and became depressed when she was back home and didn't have the social interactions she had in the nursing home. It broke my heart seeing her so happy and then bringing her home. She passed away two weeks later.
The reason Medicaid wouldn't pay was my mom sold her house 3 years ago after my dad passed away and so medicaid counted that as money she should have to support her bill. The whole situation was a stressful mess that I still don't completely understand. The nursing home should have waited until Medicaid was officially approved before letting her move in. They will not take responsibility for that and are forcing the bill on me. I need help, this is too much for my family to shoulder after all the other expenses related to her care, death, and memorial. Please, if you can help, my family would really appreciate anything you could do to help.
