On Thursday, May 16th, we had an extremely large oak tree fall on our family home during the severe weather event that affected most of the Houston area. Thankfully, the girls and I had just left to buy coloring books before a family trip, and no one was home at the time. We’re also extremely fortunate that the damage was confined mostly to the garage, attic, fence, and front of the house. We’re not sure if there will be more damage when the tree is removed, but we are so grateful for the blessings we are able to see in this situation.
After filing with our homeowner’s insurance, we’ve found out that we’re going to have to pay a 3 percent deductible, a change from the 1 percent deductible we’ve had for the 12 years we’ve owned our home. This went into effect without our knowledge on April 26th of this year. Between the extra expenses incurred waiting for insurance to take care of the issues and the deductible that will be triple what we expected, we’re humbly asking for a little help to come up with the money to pay it. We’ve filed with FEMA as well, but our claim has been denied until we can submit an appeal with documentation from our homeowner’s insurance, which we don’t expect will be quick considering the scope of the events in our area.
Anyone who knows us knows my husband, Charles, works extremely hard for our family as a first responder, and we have two small girls at home. I have the most fun job ever as the in-store marketing supervisor at our local Chick-fil-A, but only work part-time so I can be home with the girls as much as needed, especially with the summer coming.
If everyone we know just chipped in $10-$20, it would relieve a huge amount of the financial burden. We understand that may not be possible and if you can’t, we appreciate you just sharing our story as well.
