Assist the Chromey Family After Jerry's Passing

My name is Joe Kempfer and I am honored to establish this GoFundMe site on behalf of my good friend and former co-worker, Jerry Chromey and his family.

On December 9, 2024, Jerry Chromey, a thirty-seven-year educator and administrator with the Stroudsburg Area School District passed away. Jerry looked forward to retirement and spending time participating in bass tournaments, as his love for fishing was almost an obsession. Unfortunately, Jerry spent his retirement beset by health issues, and many were unaware of just how bad things had become over time. A massive blood clot (DVT) in his leg manifested itself because of a rare clotting disorder known as Factor-V Leiden, a hereditary disorder. Diagnosed as a diabetic, slowly but surely, his kidney function began to decrease. After a horrific vehicle accident in 2020, Jerry began undergoing dialysis which impacted his ability to do the things he looked forward to doing. As the years progressed, and the dialysis treatments became less and less effective, the strain on his heart from dialysis began to surface. Diagnosed with ESRD (End-Stage Renal Disease), he had difficulty walking without assistance, could no longer drive, and essentially became housebound. Beginning in the summer of 2024, the negative impacts of his health would require his wife, Margaret, to ultimately take a leave of absence from her teaching job in September of 2024 to stay at home and care for him. There were multiple hospital stays. His blood pressure consistently ran low, as the dialysis treatments continued to affect his heart and breathing. He grew weaker and in October of 2024 he suffered a heart attack, which required a stent insertion. At that time, doctors discovered an almost complete blockage in his heart, but until his blood pressure could be stabilized, they were unable to do much to address the blockage. Jerry wasn’t home a week before he wound up in the hospital again, for the entire month of November, with severe low blood pressure. Discharged on November 30, Jerry grew weaker, his breathing grew more labored, his blood pressure remained low, and he passed from a massive heart attack at home on December 9, 2024.

The pain of losing a loved one is an unimaginable burden. But for the Chromey family, their grief is compounded by financial burdens left behind. From a practical standpoint, the monthly household income was reduced by two-thirds upon Jerry's passing. Jerry’s wife utilized the entire value of a small insurance policy left behind to offset some of the debts incurred, and then began to use as much of her personal earnings afterwards. Jerry had no will. And his story should be one for all who procrastinate in preparing accordingly. While the family is reeling from the emotional devastation, they are now coming to terms with the harsh reality of their financial situation. The family is experiencing some financial hardships at this time. There are still numerous debts outstanding and there is still a very distinct possibility that creditors could make claims against Jerry's 50% vested interest in the home built thirty years ago, incurring even more debt for his family to face. Dealing with these financial obligations while mourning the loss of a loved one is an unimaginable challenge. The stress and pressure can be overwhelming, making it difficult for the family to focus on healing and supporting each other during this crucial time. Your generous contributions will directly help them cover some of Jerry’s outstanding debts and allow them to focus on what truly matters: grieving, healing, and remembering Jerry. Every dollar donated will make a tangible difference. No amount is too small, and your support, whether it's a financial contribution or a share of this campaign, will be deeply appreciated. Beyond financial assistance, your thoughts, prayers, and words of comfort are also invaluable. Please keep the Chromey family in your thoughts as they navigate this incredibly difficult time.

Jerry dedicated his thirty-seven-year career as both a Special Education teacher and later as an Assistant Director of Special Education, advocating for the rights of special needs students and their families, establishing relationships within the Stroudsburg community, and building a legacy of advocacy, compassion, and unwavering commitment to ensuring every student had the opportunity to thrive. Jerry's impact on the Stroudsburg community was immeasurable. He leaves behind a legacy of profound influence on countless students, families, and educators.
