Help Peg and Jim Overcome Fire Loss

Donation protected
On Dec. 10, 2024, a fire happened in my dear friends' house. Those of you who know Peg and Jim can probably imagine it took me some convincing to let me set up this campaign for them. Even though they both are visually impaired, they would never ask for people's help, even in emergencies like this, as they want to be self-sufficient and always rely on each other and their family and close friends.

This time they do need more help, even though they keep saying they are OK. Peg and Jim are rattled by the ordeal (Peg is more so than Jim, who is the rock) and are currently staying at a hotel thanks to the emergency assistance from the American Red Cross. Both their guide dogs are with them. Two cats have been found; the third one is hiding somewhere, but they are sure Clam would never leave the house, so he is probably just scared.

The fire started in the attic and was contained there, thanks to the Erie Fire Department's quick response. No major structural damage was done to the house, but the firefighters came with full power to stop it. So there is a lot of water and smoke damage to both the house and everything in it, starting with the furniture and ending with clothes and other personal belongings.

The insurance company is currently evaluating the damage. The Fire Department ruled it as an accident, so hopefully the insurance claim will not be denied. However, it might take a while and Peg and Jim cannot stay in the hotel for a long time. The power and heating in the house were cut off, and the damage to the systems seems to be repairable.

Where help is needed is with the emergency and adjustment expenses. It is not easy for anyone, but for visually impaired people who rely on their usual surroundings more than us non-disabled people, it is even harder to be out of the beloved and comfortable house in the middle of the winter.

Any donated amount will be greatly appreciated. I would also appreciate it if you share this message widely, especially among people who know Peg and Jim. I am hoping for an appropriate response from everyone who cares for this selfless, loving, and caring couple. This is a good opportunity for us to return that love and care to them.
