Hello, I am Darby Brown. My brother Ethan and I are fundraising for our mom, Lisa Petkovich Brown.
The people who know my mom -and know her journey with cancer- know that she has gone through so much, yet through so much darkness, she continues to be one of the strongest and brightest lights in all of our lives.
My mom has gone through 4 cancer diagnoses since 2007 and more than 7 major surgeries with the most recent being Sept, 2022 and April, 2023.
In 2022, my mom endured a radical major surgery to cure her most recent diagnosis of cancer. This surgery left her with a debilitating disability that greatly impacts her quality of life, and more importantly, her dignity. This complication is the first time I’ve witnessed my mom (even in the face a doctors giving her 2 years to live) show any signs of defeat through so many battles in this long journey with cancer.
Thankfully, there is a medication to help this complication. Unfortunately, the medication is not covered by OHIP or private insurance. This medication costs $2300 and has the possibility to be effective for as little as 3 months, but sometimes as long as 1 year.
With the medication not being covered and possibly needing to spend up to or more than $10,000 a year, it has caused my mom a great deal of stress.
Seeing my mom not be the person she was before this surgery due to this complication has been devastating. Without this medication my mom has not been able to freely do the simple things that she enjoys, such as walk the dogs or volunteering at a farm sanctuary.
The money raised will be used solely toward the ongoing purchase of this medication as well as other medical bills that arise.
Notes from my mom explaining more in-depth her medical histories...
Dear friends, this has not been an easy decision and has been a real struggle for me to ask for financial assistance to help, but with your support I can hope to cover these costs and access alternative resources on my healing journey.
My family and friends are the reason I have had the strength to rise to these challenges and without them this journey would have never been possible.
My cancer journey began in 2007 with success from surgery to remove mass, 2 skin grafts and radiation.
In 2015 the cancer returned in different area but surgery to remove the mass was not an option. The mass involved sacral nerves and vessels and was inoperable. The treatment included an extreme amount of radiation and chemotherapy that rendered the mass inactive. Unfortunately the radiation treatment left me with many new challenges and complications;
2016-abdominal surgery to repair complications from radiation.
In 2018 I was diagnosed with treatment induced AML (Acute Myeloid Leukaemia). I was informed at that time that my prognosis was grave and I was not a candidate for stem cell transplant. After intense chemotherapy, I remain in remission from AML for 5 years.
2021-I had major surgery to repair more complications from radiation.
2022-after all that success, the original cancer metastasized again in another location. The only treatment was a radical surgery which I had in Sept 2022. The recovery from this surgery has been ongoing with many complications resulting in 2 more emergent surgeries- the most recent being April 2023.
As my daughter mentions, the radical surgery to remove the cancer in Sept 2022 left me with a debilitating complication. I have researched other grants as well and none will provide assistance.
I have had the first treatment and after less than 3 months I will need another treatment of this medication in conjunction with another costly medication. I can only hope that I will get more than 3 months relief this time.
