Assist Joni and Family Through Deb's Final Days

When I first met Deborah Martin, my best friend Joni's mom, I was blown away. She reminded me of someone from a movie—amazing style, impeccable sense of design, genuine in speech, sparing no fools.

Over the years, I've watched from Joni's POV as Deb weathered adversity, became a very successful businesswoman, took courageous adventures... like setting off for the Appalachian Trail a few years ago.

When she came back from the AT, Joni noticed she had changed—but didn't know why. Last summer, Joni, Jace, and their family moved back to Texas from New England. Joni, intuitively knowing she had to get back home to Texas, left Massachusetts—and her dream job—behind. Deb's ancestors knew and called Joni home so she could support Deb on a sacred journey.

Last fall, the diagnosis came: Glioblastoma. An aggressive, incurable brain cancer. Since then, Joni has been Deb's primary caregiver, mothering her mom as she lives her final days.

It will be soon now. Joni believes it may just be a matter of days. She's calling family, setting up appointments so loved ones can visit, putting out the box of tissue at the end of the bed by the guest book. Attending not only Deb, but those who love her.

Meanwhile, bills must be paid. Groceries purchased. Dinner cooked. Dogs fed. End-of-life arrangements must be made and paid for.

Joni's had a few paying contracts, but those have mostly ended now. Amidst caring for Deb, she's had to send resumes, attend interviews... put her best foot forward to try to land a job. When all she wants to do is grieve.

She doesn't know I'm setting this up yet. She'd probably tell me not to. That she'll be okay on her own. And you know what? I have no doubt that she would. But she shouldn't have to.
