Hello, my name is Brittany. My daddy was in a really bad car accident in the beginning of February of this year, along with my brother. My brother is going to be okay. He's in a wheelchair, but he will walk again. My daddy, on the other hand, is not. He is still in UNC Chapel Hill. He has several facial fractures, a brain bleed, and several other injuries. He was doing well not long after the accident. He was conscious and talking, laughing, and joking around. He aspirated one night and has gone downhill ever since. He was put on a ventilator, and every time they tried to take him off, he'd fail his breathing tests. They asked me if I'd like to try a trach and feeding tube to allow his lungs to get better. I said, "Absolutely, do it." Well, now he doesn't have much brain function. He responds to pain, but nothing else. He cannot follow commands at all. I visited on Saturday last week (I live an hour and 45 minutes from the hospital), and he had his eyes open and was moving, so I thought he was getting better. They then informed me that though his eyes are open and he's moving, he's not looking at anything, and he's only moving because he's in pain. I cannot continue to let him suffer like that, and my daddy always said he did not want to live on machines. I'm having to make the difficult choice of taking my daddy off the ventilator tomorrow. The chaplain will be there and will make fingerprint memorials for me and my nieces. My daddy is 74 years old. Although he wasn't there for me for much of my childhood, he taught me quite a bit of life lessons growing up, and I'll always appreciate that. I do love my daddy very much, so this is very hard to do. I know I'll never be able to afford a burial and funeral service, and my daddy had no life insurance, so I'm only asking for enough for a cremation. I'm having to figure all this out pretty much alone. I have never created a fundraiser before, but I'm desperate. The hospital morgue will only hold my daddy's body for three days. If you can help at all, that would be amazing! Any little bit will help.
